Ron Slattery Memorial Twenty-20 Match Report
Friday 28th December 2007
The QEO was host for the 4th Annual Twenty-20 Match for the Ron Slattery Memorial Match between co-tenants Sandhurst & Bendigo. With the ledger 2-1 In Bendigo's favour overall Sandhurst who currently hold the cup, were keen to even the ledger and fielded a strong side for the contest. Sandhurst won the toss and sent Bendigo into bat. The two sides had earlier in the month played out a last over thriller in the BDCA Home & Away season with Sandhurst securing victory in the final over of the match and this contest would prove to be even tighter.
Bendigo's innings never really got going, with some tight fielding and excellent bowling making boundaries near impossible. Tim Williams got the initial break through and finished with a very handy 1/17 from 4 overs. Alex Trump came on 1st change and proved the most successful of the Sandhurst bowlers claimng the wickets of Mcarthur, Brewin and Bendigo captain Mark Ryan who was superbly caught at deep cover by Tim Williams to finish with 3 for 12 from his 4 overs.
Michael Winzar batting at 4, was the mainstay of Bendigo's innings but when he was bowled for 16 by Nathan O'Neill (1/13 off 4 overs) the innings fell apart. Bendigo's cause wasn't aided by 3 run outs gifting Sandhurst additional wickets, The innings concluded when Wayne Saunders was caught brilliantly one handed at slip by Mark Holland for 13 off the bowling of Ben Leed (2/16) with the total on 80 in the 18th over.
Sandhurst's batsmen faired no better when their time came to bat, Andrew Sheahan picked up both openers with the new ball to finish with 2/10 off 4 overs. Fellow opening bowler Michael Winzar also claimed two wickets to finish with 2/16 from 4 overs. Nick Scullie (14) attempted to anchor the innings but when he and then Anthony West both became stumping victims in the same over to the spin of Nathan Cook who bowled the spell of the match to finish with 2/6 from 4 overs Sandhurst looked in trouble.
Bendigo Skipper Mark Ryan came on and picked up innings top scorer Joel Schneider (17) and Alex Trump (6) to have Sandhurst 8 down needing 3 to win from the final over. The over started with a dot, then a single to Nathan O'Neill, another dot ball, then from the 4th ball of the over Sandhurst tied the scores with a quick single. It was left to Nathan O'Neill to hit the winning run from the 2nd last ball of the match as he finished 8 not out with Ben Leed 10 not out.
A Man of the Match was awarded for each side, Alex Trump's 3/12 earning him the nod for the victors and Andrew Sheehans 2/10 with the new ball earning him Bendigo's Man of the Match in the low scoring affair.
In the curtain raiser played as a 17 & Under match for the Girton Grammar - Weeroona College Cup between Sandhurst Weeroona and Bendigo-Girton Grammar, Sandhurst Weeroona won the toss and batted first. Sandhurst compiled a most competitve 5 for 136 which was highlighted by a superb 61 from David Blume. The wickets were shared evenly amongst the Bendigo Girton bowlers with no multiple wicket takers for the innings.
In response Bendigo Girton got off to a good start and were best served by Henry Anderton's 31 and Damian Wust's 17 but in the end fell 25 runs short as they were bowled out for 111 in response. Best bowlers for Sandhurst were Clinton Botham 3/21, David Barker 2/10 and Josh Ennis 2/37.
A Man of the match was awarded for both sides with David Blume the obvious choice for Sandhurst Weeroona and Henry Anderton claiming Bendigo Girton's.
