Sandhurst Cricket Club: A Brief History
October 1928 heralded the arrival of the Sandhurst Footballers Cricket Club and except for the advent of World War 2, has continued to play an important part in the Bendigo District Cricket Association.
Sandhurst played in the First Grade Matting and BDCA 2nd X1 competitions in our early history. In 1939 it was a step into 1st XI cricket with premiership honours following in 1942.
Reforming after the war as Sandhurst Cricket Club the club steadily gathered talented cricketers and secured Ken Wust as captain. Combining a talented group of veterans with an exciting group of youngsters, Sandhurst was to dominate local cricket for a decade. From 1958 to 1968 the club was to win 6 senior premierships and a host of seconds and lightning premierships. It was also during this time that the Club went two years and 24 matches without tasting defeat.
The seventies were also successful years, with a further 3 premierships, but a premiership has proved elusive since 1978/79.
Sandhurst has provided the BDCA with some of its great names with players such as John Turner, Doug Keck, Frank Watts, Ron Slattery, Barry Ayres, Robert Court, Ken Wust and Frank Scholes providing great entertainment over the years. In more recent times, batsman Nick Scullie and all rounder Mark Keck continue Sandhurst’s fine tradition.
Off the field the club has indeed been fortunate to have great administrators who have worked hard to move the club forward. Dr. Gretton-Watson, Noel Turner, Morrie Hesse and Peter Crow have made invaluable contributions to Sandhurst over the years.
