Sandhurst Twenty 20 Competition 1st Round Match Vs Eaglehawk
It’s not enough readers are privileged enough o get two versions of the Giraffe report in one week, but hey I guess it’s your lucky day for the second time this week it’s the Giraffe reporting in on the mid-week Twenty 20 clash.
The BDCA belatedly joined in on the glitz and glamour that is the Twenty 20 cricket concept. Facing up against Eaglehawk for the second match in a row out at Canterbury Park. Eaglehawk won the toss and with light expected to be a problem come the end of the match predictably decided to make use of the brighter conditions. The match provided both teams opportunities to experiment with batting and bowling combinations and after a blistering start with two fours in the first three balls, Andy Sheehan didn’t take long to get back amongst the wickets claiming Andrew Smith caught behind.
Craig Burn took the new ball and made the perfect start picking up Matt White caught by Trumpy at mid-wicket and when Andy Sheehan picked up another wicket in the 3rd over of the innings Eaglehawk were 3/15. After falling for the trap of going too hard to early, Eaglehawk then steadied the innings through Glen Daly and Cory Jacobs. The pair used controlled aggression to add 54 for the 4th wicket before Dean Trew proved his panther like qualities in the field to complete the run out of Daly with the total on 69.
Having being held back in order to bowl at the death of the innings, Tim Robertson (1/16 from 4) was the pick of the Sandhurst bowlers, well backed up by good catching from Andy Sheehan to remove Cory Jacobs, and Craig Burn to catch Matt Fitt off the bowling of Quinton Bentley to restrict Eaglehawk to 7 for 132 from 20 overs.
Sandhurst also mixed up their batting order, with Tim Robertson and Anthony West opening the innings. The pair made a cautious start against some tight bowling from the Eaglehawk openers before Tim Robertson was LBW with the total on 12. Anthony West then picked up the pace and just started to get going when Kalen Geary juggled a catch running back with the flight of the ball to dismiss Westy for 15 off 13. The remainder of Sandhurst’s top order then fell at regular intervals, as Schneider, Scullie and Fletcher were all dismissed to leave Sandhurst 5 for 56 in the 12th over.
Two of Sandhurst’s bigger hitters Andy Sheehan and Craig Burn then joined together and breathed some life into the Sandhurst run chase, aided by an alert Dale Oddy who correctly picked up that Eaglehawk had too many fielders outside the circle when Andy Sheehan was bowled and therefore allowed to continue his innings. The pair added 48 for the 6th wicket but when they fell in successive balls in the 17th over the task was too much. Sandhurst pushed on and finished 8 for 120 from their twenty overs to fall 12 runs short with Craig Burn 27 off 19 and Andy Sheehan 18 the best performed.
Andy Sheehan claimed Man of the Match for his 2/23 and 18 with the bat.
Fortunately the loss does not spell the end for Sandhurst in the inaugural Twenty 20 competition qualifying for the quarter finals in 8th position where we will face the first placed qualified BUCC’s at Harry Trot oval in 2 weeks time.
