Twenty/20 Match Report

Twenty/20 Ron Slattery Memorial Trophy Vs Bendigo

@ QEO on Friday 29th December 2006

1st XI

Nick Scullie & Tim Robertson assumed control in Kecky’s absence and won the toss and sent Bendigo into bat in front of an impressive crowd at the QEO. Early on Bendigo used the flat track and pace of the bowlers to their advantage and pile on 0/51 in 6 overs. Dale Oddy was bought into the attack early with immediate effect Joel Schneider taking a good catch under pressure to dismiss the dangerous Tony Ryan. The run rate still continued to climb and at 1/105 off 10 overs Sandhurst was looking down the barrel of a mammoth total.

Then Dale Oddy tempted some impatient Goer’s batsmen into false strokes and combined with some good catching from the boys in the outfield 3 wickets fell in the space of 4 balls with Dale finishing with the impressive figures of 4/41. Tim Williams (3/24) and Alex Trump (1/9) bowled accurately at the death to restrict Bendigo to 170 all out in the 19th over, failing to bat out their allotted 20 overs.

Sandhurst were left to face a required run rate of 8.5 an over, and Dutchy (27 off 18 balls) and Brock Fletcher (15 off 14 balls) got us off to a good start keeping up with the required run rate adding 45 for the 1st wicket before Brock was bowled in the 6th over and when Dutchy was unfortunately run out in the same over Sandhurst were 2/50 still requiring 121 from 14 overs. Westy & Nick Scullie then added a brisk 36 off 26 balls before Westy was dismissed for 21 off 19 balls leaving 3/84 off 10 overs.

From there Bendigo never got another look in, Scullie (59 not out from 44 balls) and Tim Robertson (24no from 21 balls) controlled the chase and victory was secured when Timmy drove through Mid On for 4 to cement a 7 wicket victory with 4 balls to spare. The pair added an unbeaten 87 from just 58 balls to ensure the Ron Slattery Memorial trophy was heading home to Sandhurst for the first time in three years.

Nick Scullie continued his love affair with the QEO and string of Man of The Match Awards for his well paced 59 not out.

Under 17s Weeroona College / Girton Grammar Challenge Cup.

In the curtain raiser for the Weeroona College / Girton Grammar Challenge Cup, Sandhurst won the toss and sent Bendigo into bat. After Josh Ennis (1/12) picked up a wicket in the first over but the game was controlled by Bendigo’s Alex Sutton who batted superbly to make an unbeaten 68 from just 44 balls to set up the Bendigo innings. Nick Drew 2/15, Chris Miles 1/21 and Nick Whittle 1/15 were the successful bowlers for the Dragons. The boys showed patches of good cricket, but some unnecessary over throws and dropped catches allowed Bendigo to reach an imposing 5/163 off 20 overs.

Captain Dylan Gibson led the reply from the top of the order getting the innings off to a flyer before he played 1 too many shots and was bowled for a run a ball 30. From there wickets fell at regular intervals, and only Blair Gouge (22) & Zac Kinsman (18) managed significant contributions with the bat. The boys were eventually bowled out for 118 in the 2nd last over to fall 45 runs short in the run chase. The boys should take some positives from the performance and applied themselves well throughout the match.

In the New Year, the home and away season resumes on January 6th & 7th again against QEO co-tenants Bendigo at the QEO (1sts & 3rds) & Weeroona Oval (2nds & U17s)
